On Monday, Aug. 31, 2020, at approximately 8:55 p.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received a call ofa single vehicle crash with a train in New Waverly on County Road 975 East. Sergeant Adam Martin, Deputy Joe Gentile and Deputy Jacqueline Beebout responded to the crash along with the Indiana State Police, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, New Waverly Fire Department, Norfolk Southern Railroad Police and Phoenix Ambulance Service.

Initial scene assessment found a single vehicle traveled onto the railroad tracks at the crossing and was struck by an eastbound train.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Joe Gentile found that David Diaz, 39, of Logansport, had been driving a 2014 Toyota northbound on County Road 975 East when he drove off the roadway and onto the railroad tracks. The Toyota became stuck on the railroad tracks and Diaz exited the vehicle to obtain assistance. While Mr. Diaz was out of the Toyta, an eastbound Norfolk Southern train struck the car pushing it eastbound past the crossing. Diaz was uninjured and located by responding agencies near the intersection. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (574) 753-7800.
