STATE GOVERNMENT COMPLEX CLOSED: The state government complex will be closed to the public Tuesday and Wednesday in light of recent national events, threats to other state capitols and COVID-19 restrictions.

According to a news release issued Friday by the Governor’s office, there have been no credible threats against the Statehouse.

The Governor’s weekly COVID-19 briefing will be held Thursday, Jan. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray and House Speaker Todd Huston have canceled legislative activity for the week of Jan. 18. Bray and Huston said no committee or session meetings will be held this week, and staff will work remotely until instructed to return to the building.

COVID-19 UPDATES: Hoosiers age 70 and older, along with healthcare workers, long-term care residents and first responders, are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. To schedule, visit https://ourshot.in.gov or call 211. Additional locations and appointments are being added as more vaccine becomes available.

As of Monday, the Indiana Department of Health reported that nearly 303,000 Hoosiers have received their first dose of vaccine, and nearly 64,000 have been fully vaccinated.

The numbers reported as of noon Monday for Cass County included 4731 cases to date (13 new), 60 deaths (0 new) and a 7-day positivity rate of 13.3% for January 5-11. Find more info at coronavirus.in.gov.

COVID-19 MEMORIAL: The Presidential Inaugural Committee will host a Nationwide COVID-19 Memorial to remember and honor the lives lost to COVID-19 in cities and towns across the country. A Washington, D.C. ceremony will feature a lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Cities and towns across the country are invited to join Washington, D.C. in illuminating buildings and ringing church bells at 5:30 p.m. ET in a national moment of unity and remembrance. JCPENNEY BUILDING COMING DOWN: Demolition work continued yesterday on the JCPenney building at the former Logansport Mall. The former Logansport Mall is becoming an open-air retail center known as “The Junction” and a Hampton Inn will be built at the location where JCPenney is being torn down. Details.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT BEING REPLACED: We noticed the playground equipment on the north side of Spencer Park in Logansport has been taken down, so we checked in with the parks department to see what’s planned. The old equipment was installed in 2003 and will be replaced with a new structure in the coming months.
