Opportunity to get a start in fire service for residents of Miami Township

New Waverly, IN – The New Waverly Fire Department (NWFD), Miami Township, Cass County, Indiana will soon begin a Mandatory Firefighter Course. This course results in Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) Certification for HAZMAT Awareness and Mandatory Firefighter. It is an introductory level course for those seeking to start in the fire service.

Chief Buffum explains “this is a first step course for those brand new to the fire service and involves about 60 hours of instruction.”

Buffum further explained NWFD is focusing on residents of Miami Township, or the boundary areas adjacent to the coverage area of NWFD.

“For those who have been thinking of getting involved in firefighting, or who have just been looking for some way to get more involved, this is a first step.”

Firefighters from neighboring fire departments will also be participating. The prerequisites for the course are specified by IDHS and include being at least 18 years of age and a member of an Indiana Fire Department. Those not already affiliated can submit an application to join NWFD before the course starts. There is no fee to attend the training.

Evening course dates (6-10 p.m.):

March 15, 18, 22, 25, 29

April 1, 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 22

Saturday course dates (9a-5p): April 3, 17
