Cass County Democrats hosted Joe Donnelly at Riverside Park on Saturday, May 8, 2021. A crowd of over 50 people included Democrats from Michigan, counties around Indiana, Cass County party regulars and a handful of people who just wanted to hear what the former senator had to say.

Party Chair Lita Michael Rouser welcomed former US senator Donnelly back to Cass County, thanking him for delivering for Indiana by saving the jobs at Chrysler, and for casting crucial votes to bring affordable health care to 23 million people, and for improving mental health care for people serving in the military.

Donnelly started off by thanking the “health care heroes” who are working long hours through the pandemic, and reminding everyone of how President Biden quickly kept his promise to make the vaccine available to all Americans.

He gave special recognition to the five organizers in attendance from the United Rural Democrats, saying how much he enjoyed serving on the agriculture committees in both the House and Senate, and told a little story about getting an exemption for Indiana’s tomato farmers. He noted the importance of health care and hospitals for rural areas, and sees broadband availability to all rural areas as essential. He called broadband “the new electricity.”

“It’s because of you,” he said, that he was able to partner with President Obama to save those Chrysler jobs, and noted that there are now over 7,000 people working in those jobs.

The former senator credited Democrats, especially union members, for giving him the privilege of serving in office. Democrats knocking on doors and spreading the word makes government work to lift up working people with health care, education, and jobs. The American Rescue Plan and the American Jobs Plan represent Democrats’work to strengthen working people.
