Crash seriously injures three and closes SR 25 N for almost four hours

On Friday, May 21, 2021, at approximately 8:55 a.m. Cass County Central Dispatch was notified of a two-vehicle crash south of County Road 650 North on State Road 25. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police, the Logansport Police Department and the Cass County Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene. Units from Harrison Township Fire, Twelve Mile Fire, Logansport Fire and Phoenix Ambulance Service also responded to the crash. Initial scene assessment found a northbound Dodge van had travelled left of center on State Road 25 and struck a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Shane Johnson found that 30-year-old Erica Gaby of Logansport, IN had been driving at 2012 Dodge Caravan northbound on SR 25 when she drove left of center and struck a southbound 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 41-year-old Jesse Chantea of Plymouth, IN.

Gaby had to be extricated by fire personnel before being flown by a medical helicopter to a trauma center in Fort Wayne, IN with serious injuries. Two children in the Caravan appeared to be uninjured but were transported by ambulance to Logansport Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Deputy Shane Johnson stated, “Both children were properly restrained in child seats which protected them from injury.”

The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Jesse Chantea, had to be extricated from his vehicle by fire personnel before being flown by a medical helicopter to a trauma center in Fort Wayne with serious injuries. A passenger in the Tahoe, 38-year-old Maria Chantea,was also extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to IU Arnett hospital in Lafayette, IN.

State Road 25 was closed for approximately four hours while crash reconstruction officers from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Logansport Police Department and the Indiana State Police worked the scene.
