Home explosion near Twelve Mile critically injures one

On Friday, October 8, 2021 at approximately 9:54 a.m., Cass County Central Dispatch was notified of an explosion in the area of County Road 600 East and County Road 800 North. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Indiana State Police responded to that area. Fire units from Harrison Township Fire, Twelve Mile Fire and Logansport Fire, as well as Phoenix Ambulance Service, also responded to the scene. Initial scene assessment found a residence in the 7000 block of County Road 600 East had exploded.

Preliminary investigation by Sergeant Pat Zeider found 63-year-old Paul Ulerick of rural Twelve Mile, IN had been working in his basement when his residence exploded. A neighbor responding to the scene after hearing and feeling the explosion. The Good Samaritan was able to remove Mr. Ulerick from the debris and fire. Phoenix Ambulance personnel transported the victim to Logansport Memorial Hospital where he was later flown via air ambulance to a trauma center in Fort Wayne.

The fire departments extinguished the fire and searched for other victims. The departments were able to confirm no one else was at the residence when the explosion occurred.

The Indiana State Fire Marshall’s Office was requested to assist with the investigation.

This incident is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Indiana State Fire Marshall’s office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
