12/22/22: Single vehicle crash on Cass County Road 400 West north of US 24

On Thursday, December 22, 2022, at approximately 9:34 p.m. Cass County Central Dispatch received a call of a vehicle fire on County Road 400 West north of US 24.

Sergeant Joe Gentile responded to the crash along with several other deputies and public safety agencies. The assisting agencies included Cass County Fire District #1, Indiana State Fire Marshall’s Office, Cass County Emergency Management Agency, Cass County Emergency Medical Services and the Cass County Coroner’s Office.

Initial scene assessment found a southbound pickup truck travelled off of the east side of the roadway and landed on a culvert drainage structure.

Evidence at the scene indicated a 2007 Ford F 150 was southbound on County Road 400 West when the driver travelled off of the east side of the roadway and landed on a culvert drainage structure. Good Samaritans stopped at the scene, checked on the driver and called for a wrecker to assist. Upon arrival, the wrecker service found the pickup truck engulfed with fire. After the fire was extinguished, a single occupant was located in the cab of the pickup truck.

The Cass County Coroner’s Office has scheduled a forensic examination to positively identify the deceased occupant. Information on the identity of the occupant will be released when available.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Cass County Coroner’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 574-753-7800.
