Cass County area responders train for hazardous materials emergencies

LOGANSPORT, INDIANA – Responders from multiple agencies spent their Saturday participating in hands on training to be better prepared for propane emergencies. Participants included response personnel from Cass County Emergency Management Agency Logansport Fire Department, Cass County Fire District 1, Walton Fire Department, Elkhart County Emergency Management Agency and Porter County Emergency Management Agency.

The full day training, conducted by Responder Training Enterprises, LLC, was held at the Cass County Emergency Management Agency. Topics of discussion included propane properties, when to and when not to use normal tactics including rolling a tank to change what’s venting from it, flaring liquid and vapor, water injection, vehicle orientation, plumbing/piping systems, assortment of tank options/attachment points, valving, weight issues, pressure management, transportation options, pressure gauge verification, liquid volume and temperature control and more. 

Hands on training evolutions included emergency response skills such as venting product to atmosphere, freeze patching, liquid and vapor flaring, and water injection.
