Update on August 31, 2023 crash at 600 East and US 24

On Thursday, August 31, 2023 at approximately 12:11 p.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received numerous calls of a two-vehicle crash at County Road 600 East and US 24. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Units from the Walton Fire Department, New Waverly Fire Department and Cass County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the crash. Initial scene assessment found a passenger car and a pickup truck came to rest northwest of the intersection after colliding in the westbound lanes of US 24.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Ryan Preston found that Neita Green, 82, of Galveston, had been driving a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox northbound on County Road 600 East where she had been crossing US 24 and failed to yield to a westbound 2020 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by James McDonald, 58, of Brookston.

Neita Green was transported by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent in Kokomo with minor injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, James McDonald, refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene with substantial damage. The roadway was partially closed for approximately one hour for crash investigation and cleanup.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the office at 574-753-7800.
