Cass County Community Foundation announces new Suanne Schwering Memorial Scholarship

Last Updated on October 26, 2023 by Cass County Community Foundation

The Cass County Community Foundation is pleased to announce a new scholarship available for Logansport High School seniors graduating in 2024. The Suanne Schwering Memorial Scholarship was established by Columbia Middle School colleagues of Schwering after her passing in February of this year.

Schwering taught at CMS from its inception as a middle school in 1973 until her retirement in 1998. Prior to that, she taught at Daniel Webster and Washington elementary schools. She was a much loved social studies teacher and faculty member. When it came to teaching – or anything for that matter – she was all in! She made learning fun and for many, many of her students she was their most favorite teacher.

Beyond the classroom, she was known to build close relationships with her colleagues. She was an organizer and loved to plan numerous events and excursions with her students and cohorts. Of these excursions, she was the director of the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC which was a favorite memory of the many students and chaperones who took the trip at the end of each school year. She participated with great enthusiasm in the variety of extracurricular activities — from weekly Home Room Intramural games, to the Columbia 250, to the Christmas Treasure Hunt, to the annual Talent Show, and to the various Spirit Weeks held throughout the school year.

After 37 years in the classroom, Suanne decided it was time to retire but then found herself involved in “The Arts” and was the first executive director of the Cass County Arts Alliance. She also served on the Logansport Parks Board and among her accomplishments was the inception of “Light Up Logansport” Christmas parade.

Suanne’s love for her students, fellow teachers, and the community inspired her colleagues to establish this fund in her memory and honor. The scholarship is for Logansport High School seniors who plan to attend a four-year institution and major in education. The application process will be open in late November. Former students and colleagues are encouraged to help grow the fund by sending a gift to: Suanne Schwering Scholarship Fund, % Cass County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 441, Logansport, IN 46947.
