Almost 80 emergency management and weather forecasting professionals from Northern Indiana and adjacent states traveled to Logansport Thursday to discuss ways to improve warning coordination and public messaging during weather emergencies. Attendees came from the many counties served by the Chicago, Indianapolis and Northern Indiana offices of the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service partnered with the Cass County Emergency Management Agency to bring the event to Logansport.

The Regional Integrated Warning Team Workshop brought together partners from the fields of emergency management, meteorology and journalism to explore hazards presented by weather events, each discipline’s respective needs and resources applicable to such events, and how the whole community can work together to achieve timely and interoperable communications, effective and coordinated public warning and complementary coordinated impact assessment.

The full day of training and collaboration covered a variety of topics including National Weather Service forecasting processes, battling mis-information in the age of social media, probabilistic messaging and case studies of actual severe weather events over the last year. The program also included opportunities for attendees to work together and identify areas to strengthen collaboration for future responses.

Other organizations supporting the event included Ivy Tech Community College-Logansport, which provided the facility and NIPSCO which sponsored the meal for attendees.
