
Commercial structure fire on South County Road 700E near Walton

On the morning of May 10ᵗʰ at approximately 10:50 am, Walton Community Fire Department, New Waverly Fire Department, and Cass County EMS were dispatched to the 16xx Block South 700 East for a reported barn fire.
Upon arrival of Walton Engine 2, an approximately 50 ft by 100 ft commercial structure with fire showing from the South end of the structure. The interior of the structure was investigated, and it was determined that all fire was contained to the attic. Conditions indicated imminent ceiling collapse near the fire location and all fire companies on scene were ordered to defensive operations until the ceiling collapsed. Extinguishment began from the exterior and the ceiling in the affected area did collapse. After the primary ceiling collapse, personnel were ordered into the unaffected area of the structure to control fire spread to the north in the attic space. Personnel were successful in maintaining the fire to the original fire location. 4 fire attack lines were utilized during this fire and a tanker shuttle operation supplied water. No injuries were reported.
Fire crews remained on scene for several hours for overhaul, encountering multiple secondary ceiling collapses in the affected area due to water weight and fire damage. This fire is under investigation by the State of Indiana Fire Marshals office. Any information regarding this fire shall be directed to the Fire Marshals Office (1-800-382-4628). No foul play is suspected.
