U.S. 24/35 bridge over Wabash River to be painted; work to continue through August 2021

Last Updated on October 5, 2021 by Indiana Department of Transportation

CASS COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces lane closures for the U.S. 24/35 bridge over the Wabash River beginning Monday, March 15.

The southbound outside right lane will be closed on March 15 and 16, and the northbound outside right lane will be closed March 17 through March 26. These lane closures will be in place to install a Safe Span system to facilitate the painting of the bridge. This project will be ongoing through the beginning of August, 2021.

Painting is one of many preservation techniques utilized by INDOT to extend the life of bridge structures. Prior to painting, beams and other components are sandblasted to remove existing rust and the new coat of paint acts as a sealant to protect from water, salt and other chemicals that may cause corrosion.

INDOT urges drivers to stay alert near crews and follow traffic directions carefully. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time when driving through this area. Drivers should slow down, use extra caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
