Last Updated on August 21, 2022 by Indiana General Assembly
STATEHOUSE – Longstanding Cass County family farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to local legislators.
The Binney Farm, in operation since 1921, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award, and the Scherer Farm, in operation since 1862, received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award.
“Farming is a lifestyle that requires a lot of hard work, grit and determination,” said State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston). “These amazing farms have been doing this for over a century and deserve to be recognized for their efforts. They have contributed greatly to our state, and I wish them the best as they continue to do so in the future.”
These farm families were among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
“Farmers have always been, and continue to be, a key part of Indiana’s rich history and economic success,” said State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Logansport). “Our community is lucky to have so many families keeping the Hoosier farming tradition alive and thriving.”
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
“Agriculture is such an integral part of our state’s economy and communities,” said State Sen. Stacey Donato (R-Logansport). “These families have shown true dedication in remaining committed to serving Hoosiers for over 100 years. Congratulations to the Binney and Scherer Farms for their outstanding achievement.”
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.
